Thomas G. McCauley

I'm a researcher who studies moral thought and behavior. I'm currently a PhD candidate studying under Dr. Michael McCullough at the UC San Diego Department of Psychology. I'm also a lecturer at the University of San Diego Department of Psychology.

My research program focuses on questions related to the causes of moral thought and behavior. What are the most effective methods for manipulating empathy in the laboratory and the field? How do people navigate social life that inevitably involves conflict and exploitation? How does concern about one's reputation influence people's moral behavior? How do beliefs about sexual and cooperative morality shape religious cognition, and vice versa? And how do moral learning experiences influence people's beliefs about right and wrong? I investigate these questions using a combination of structural equation modeling, psychometrics, machine learning algorithms, computational modeling, and rigorous experimental work.
